Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What do you do at practices?

A: We start by letting everyone have an equal chance to warm up. Then we usually play doubles/mixed matches. If we have the time and court space we will play singles as well. We also have a separate training session to help beginners improve.

Q: What are the costs?

A: Everything is free for PSU students, staff, and faculty. You can borrow a racquet from the club and use our nets and birdies. Only guests from outside PSU pay a membership fee to cover these expenses. The exact fee cost depends on the number of practices that they have access to during the term.

Q: What should I wear?

A: Athletic apparel is required. If you try to play with barefeet, sandals, or jeans you might get kicked out because it's against the gym rules.

Q: I'm worried that everyone else is too good.

A: It can be intimidating for most people at first. But the members expect there to be plenty of beginners at practices and will be patient and try to help you. Plus, you'll eventually realize it's a benefit to play with people better than you because that's how you improve.

Q: Do you have a team?

A: No. We don't actually have a team. We've been thinking about how to create one, though, and our members have shown support for the idea.

Q: Do I have to come to all practices?

A: No, but we'd like you to come regularly. Come at the start of practice time whenever possible. Please consider joining as a significant commitment. The club really isn't meant to be a place to drop in and out.

Q: Do I have to join the email list?

A: Yes, if you are to become a member you need to join our club email list. It's the way we communicate to you about such things as schedules, events, and changes. Your email address is kept private. You can make it more convenient to join/leave the list by simply sending an email to badmintonpsu-join 'at' pdx 'dot' edu or badmintonpsu-leave 'at' pdx 'dot' edu (keep subject and body blank).

Q: Where else can I play badminton?

A: Please check the links under "Other places to play."

Q: Where can I buy equipment?

A: Please contact club's officers and we'll try to help you.
